Krutrim, the AI startup, launches India’s first multilingual LLM.

AI startup Krutrim, spearheaded by serial entrepreneur and CEO of Ola Group, Bhavish Aggarwal, has launched India’s first multilingual large language model (LLM). This software can generate text in 10 Indian languages, cements its place as a significant contributor to India’s changing AI landscape. Aside from language generation, Krutrim is also engaged in developing data centers, supercomputers, and chips to support India’s growing AI ecosystem.

  • Krutrim’s LLM features voice-enabled functionality and can understand multiple languages, including ‘Hinglish,’ a blend of Hindi and English.
  • The firm intends to launch a beta version of its chatbot in January, with server prototypes set to follow in mid-2024. Server production is expected to commence by the end of 2025.
  • Krutrim also plans to introduce an enterprise model called ‘Krutrim Pro’ in the next quarter to cater to the needs of businesses and organizations.

India aims to reduce reliance on technology from the United States or China and aims to establish its own AI systems to cater to its vast population. The debut of OpenAI’s ChatGPT sparked a race among Indian startups and academic groups towards developing LLMs in Indian languages, known as Indic LLMs. Krutrim’s venture signifies a major milestone in India’s aims to develop smaller yet more cost-efficient AI systems that align with the country’s culture, language, and ethos.

In the coming years, brands across the industry will have to reassess their strategies due to the rise of LLMs like ChatGPT. Retailers, for example, are using AI to overhaul operations from customer service to inventory management. As the field of AI continues to evolve, Krutrim and companies like it are driving innovation and redesigning the technology landscape, particularly in emerging markets such as India.
