Foster + Partners has revealed designs for the Xicen Science & Technology Centre in Shanghai, China. The project integrates new and existing waterways to create a low impact waterside community with places to live, work, and visit. The mixed-use development includes a cultural center, offices, retail spaces, and residential areas. The project aims to achieve a China Green Building 2-star rating.
In their winning design for the Xicen Science & Technology Centre, Foster + Partners created a mixed-use development in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta region, with a focus on integrating water and greenery into the project. The site is strategically positioned on the Shanghai – Huzhou development axis, with high-speed rail connections to the city, making it easily accessible to residents and visitors.
The cultural center, which is the centerpiece of the project, includes a learning center, theatre, and exhibition space. The design features a new water street that runs through the development, lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants to create a vibrant urban realm. The project also utilizes micromobility vehicles for sustainable travel within the development.
The development aims to achieve a China Green Building 2-star rating and will be assessed against the China Eco-districts standard. Foster + Partners have created a design that not only integrates new and existing waterways but also provides a range of public spaces that maximize the unique waterside setting.
