MIT startup unveils visionary camera that illuminates darkness and bends reality.

Ubicept, a Boston-based startup, is developing a new kind of digital camera that can see in extremely low light and around corners. The camera, based on technology developed at MIT and the University of Wisconsin, uses single photon avalanche detection (SPAD) sensors rather than the conventional CMOS sensors found in most digital cameras. SPAD sensors do not need shutters and instead measure the arrival time of individual photons to estimate the distance to a target. This enables the Ubicept camera to generate clear images even in low light and while in motion. The camera has potential applications in self-driving vehicles, industrial automation systems, and night-vision systems. Ubicept has received $8m in venture funding so far, with contributions from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Wisconsin.
